On the Rosemary Barton Live program, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Ukraine hopes for support from NATO in case of defeat in the conflict with Russia, which could lead to the Third World War. He called on the member states of the G7 and the European Union to join forces to protect the Ukrainian people and democratic values.
"We protect European values, European borders, and we protect the borders of the civilized world," Shmyhal emphasized, stressing the importance of supporting Ukraine to protect the "global future."
The Prime Minister's comments came a day after Canada's Deputy Prime Minister, Christie Freeland, said that a Russian victory in Ukraine "would mark the beginning of an entire era of the decline of democracy and the triumph of authoritarian regimes."
Shmyhal also expressed gratitude for Canada's support and called Freeland "Ukraine's greatest friend", noting that the country has received more than $13 billion in support from Canada over the past two years.
Ukraine expects to accept its application for NATO membership at the next summit in Washington in July, Shmyhal said. He added that currently Ukraine is asking its partners for military equipment, but if the time comes, the country will be grateful for military support.
The leader of the Democratic Party in the US House of Representatives, Hakim Jeffries, also did not rule out the possibility of sending US troops into Ukraine in the event of Kyiv's complete defeat in the war with Russia.
