Ukraine is preparing to rename more than 300 settlements

The parliament plans to change the names of more than 300 settlements that have symbols related to Russian imperial policy or do not meet the standards of the state language. This is reported by Rubryka, referring to draft resolution No. 11188.

According to the explanatory note, local authorities had six months to express proposals for renaming settlements, districts and other territories whose names have imperial symbols or do not meet language standards.

In the absence of a decision, the main governing documents are the recommendations of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance and the National Commission on State Language Standards.

The Committee of the Verkhovna Rada considered 340 proposals of local authorities, military administrations of settlements and recommendations from the Institute of National Memory and the Commission on State Language Standards regarding the renaming of individual settlements and districts.

Proposed renaming:

  • 7 districts,
  • 15 cities,
  • 54 villages,
  • 267 villages.

Among the renaming proposals, there are many names associated with Soviet holidays or symbols, for example, Pershe Travnia, Pershotravenka, Pervomaiske, Pershotravneve, Pershotravensk, Mayivka, etc.

It is also planned to change the names dedicated to Moscow figures, for example, Pushkin, Michurin, Maxim Gorky, Kutuzivka, Suvorov, Nekrasov, etc.

It is also planned to rename settlements that do not comply with language norms, for example, the village of Dorozhne to Dorozhne, the village of Kyblaryi to Kyblyar, etc.

It is planned to change the names of the following cities:

  • the city of Novomoskovsk, Dnipropetrovsk region, to the city of Samar;
  • the city of Pavlograd, Dnipropetrovsk region, to the city of Matviiv;
  • the city of Synelnikove, Dnipropetrovsk region, to the city of Ridnopillya;
  • the city of Pershotravensk, Dnipropetrovsk region, to the city of Shakhtarske;
  • the city of Pervomaysk, Luhansk region, to the city of Sokologhirsk;
  • the city of Molodogvardiysk, Luhansk region, to the city of Otamanivka;
  • the city of Severodonetsk, Luhansk region, to the city of Severskodonetsk;
  • the city of Chervonohrad, Lviv region, to the city of Sheptytskyi;
  • the city of Yuzhnoukrain, Mykolaiv region, to the city of Gard;
  • the city of Pervomaisk, Mykolaiv region, to the city of Olviopol;
  • the city of Yuzhne, Odesa region, to the city of Port-Annental;
  • the city of Druzhba, Sumy region, to the city of Khutir-Mykhaylivskyi;
  • the city of Krasnograd, Kharkiv region, to the city of Berestyn;
  • the city of Pervomayskyi, Kharkiv region, to the city of Zlatopil;
  • the city of Vatutine, Cherkasy region, to the city of Bagacheve.
