Ukraine is gaining momentum about the temporary cessation of financing many important projects on the US Agency for International Development (USAID). This was due to the US decision, which was adopted at the end of January 2025, when the US State Department announced "termination of work" for all existing foreign benefits and suspension of new programs. The consequences of this step can last up to half a year.
In this regard, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has already started negotiations with European partners to find alternative sources of financing for the implementation of important humanitarian, educational and medical programs. According to parliamentary representatives, most of the organizations that had previously received grants from USAID have not had time to prepare for such a sharp cessation of assistance.
Suspension of funding applies not only to social projects, but also to support key initiatives, in particular in the field of education, health care and assistance to children and families affected by Russia's armed aggression. This can create serious problems if you do not find new sources of funds in time.
Ukrainian authorities are currently looking for ways to prevent the destabilization of key social processes in the country. The Ministry of Social Policy states that this will not affect social assistance, since Ukraine receives funds for social support by other channels.
However, according to the deputies, the stop of USAID programs is jeopardy important to the state. Parliament is actively consulting with European colleagues on the possibility of replacement of funding for at least for the period until the United States has an audit of assistance and adoption of final decisions.
Frozen projects include supporting schools, medical care, including children vaccination, as well as first assistance to mothers. This again raises stability in Ukraine, because even minimal delays in the implementation of these programs can have long -term consequences for the social sphere.
Representatives of the Ukrainian Government and the diplomatic corps are trying to find ways to avoid negative consequences for the country, looking for support among European partners and calling the US to revise their decisions.
