From January 1, 2025 at 07:00, Ukraine took a historic step by officially stopping the transportation of natural gas from the Russian Federation through its gas transportation system (GTS). As noted by the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, this decision was made in the interests of national security, and international partners were informed about it.
"We have stopped the transit of Russian gas - this is a historic event. Russia is losing markets, it will experience financial losses. Europe has already decided to abandon Russian gas. The Ukrainian gas transportation system now operates in the mode of zero transit. The Ministry of Energy added that the entire infrastructure was prepared in advance to ensure reliable gas supply to Ukrainian consumers.
Ukraine's decision has already sparked discussion among European partners. accordingly, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed concern about the impact of such a move on energy supplies in the region, saying that Kyiv had abandoned alternative gas transit options.
According to analysts, the stoppage of transit will have significant geopolitical significance. As Reuters reports, Russia has lost its dominant supply of gas to the EU to competitors such as the USA, Qatar and Norway. At the same time, for Europe, this means further economic challenges, including a spike in inflation and rising costs of living. The decision to stop the transit of Russian gas was a step reduction in the implementation of Ukraine's energy independence policy. The country's authorities emphasize that this is only in accordance with national interests, but also contributes to the strengthening of European initiatives to abandon the abandonment of Russian energy carriers.
