Ukrainian without Surzhik: how to translate the word “melochny” correctly

After the start of a full -scale invasion of Russia, many Ukrainians deliberately switched to Ukrainian. This step often becomes not only a linguistic but also a value choice - part of the cultural resistance to the aggressor. However, the transition does not always happen perfectly. One of the common examples of linguistic mistake is the word "melochny".

This word is a hipa from Russian, and it has nothing to do with literary Ukrainian. The right correspondent is “petty”.

According to the academic explanatory dictionary of the Ukrainian language (Sumy), the petty is "which is based on something small, insignificant, insignificant or manifested in little things." This adjective is great for describing actions, actions or situations that are not essential, but cause annoyance with their worthlessness.

Example from Ukrainian Literature:

"Fedor went to this petty deception only to go home with her, without Victor" (Mykola Rudenko).

Linguistics experts and sociologists note that language transition is a process that requires not only practice but also self -awareness. Surzhik, Russisms and incorrect linguistic traces are the usual "traps" for those who are used to communicating in Russian.

However, despite the difficulties, the number of people who consciously choose Ukrainian is growing. And even non -ideal language is better than indifference to it.
