The term of office of Volodymyr Zelenskyi actually ends on May 20, 2024. Planned presidential elections were to be held at the end of March, but due to the imposed martial law in the country, the parliament did not appoint them. Ukrainian society is considering the issue of further leadership of the country after the end of the current five-year term of Zelenskyi's presidency.
Currently, many experts believe that Zelenskyi will remain in power until the next presidential election, since the Constitution of Ukraine stipulates that the term of office of the president ends only with the election of a new candidate. In addition, the imposed martial law in the country prevents the holding of any elections.
Some personalities, such as veteran politicians, suggest that Zelensky voluntarily resign from the post of president in May 2024. However, there are still parties that support the current leadership, believing that Zelenskyi's government is legitimate and based on the support of citizens.
At the same time, most lawyers believe that the decision on further steps should be taken by the Constitutional Court. However, so far none of the key players has initiated consideration of this matter in court. The opposition also supports the decision not to go to court and adhere to the agreement not to hold elections until the end of martial law.
