Ukraine is considering the possibility of creating a new position - a cyber diplomat - in connection with the rapid development of technologies throughout the world.
Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Oleksiy Danilov expressed this initiative during the opening of the Kyiv International Cyber Resilience Forum 2024.
"Currently, the world is witnessing a significant movement in this area. Many countries already have their own cyber diplomats. I believe that this position will also appear in Ukraine soon, as it is an important direction in the struggle," said Danilov.
It is worth noting that digital diplomacy is mentioned for the first time in Ukraine as a component of the public diplomacy strategy adopted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2021. At that time, it was mainly aimed at the "communication dimension".
Cyber diplomacy is the use of diplomatic resources and the performance of diplomatic functions in cyberspace to protect national interests. These interests are typically defined in national cyberspace or cybersecurity strategies, and include cybersecurity, countering cybercrime, building trust, protecting Internet freedom, and Internet governance.
