On the second Sunday of May in Ukraine and many countries of the world celebrate Mother's Day. It is a warm, touching holiday dedicated to women who gave their lives, raised, supported and never betrayed their children.
Mother's Day has a long history. It was started by American Anna Jervis in 1908. She lost her mother and decided to do her best to help his mothers becoming an official holiday. Her idea was supported in Georgia, and later all over America. In Ukraine, Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1928 in Galicia, but at the state level it was restored only in 1999.
Unlike the Soviet March 8, Mother's Day has a clear value - it is not just a "women's holiday", but a day for gratitude to moms. In recent years, the holiday has become increasingly popular. According to sociological surveys, most Ukrainians welcome their mothers this day: someone calls, someone sends a postcard, and someone gives flowers or gifts. But most importantly - the attention and warmth that moms deserve daily, not just once a year.
Mom is not just a word. It is support in the most difficult times, it is unconditional love, it is warmth that you remember all your life. Mother's Day is a great reason to say "thank you" again. And if your mom is near - hug her. If not - call or just remember a good word.
