Vasyl, Melania and the Old New Year: holidays and traditions of the day

Today is full of traditions, holidays and historical events. This is the date when Ukrainians celebrate the Generous Evening, and the world celebrates Rubber Duck Day. Find out what is special about this day and what prohibitions and omens are associated with it.

Church holidays

According to the new style, January 13 is the day of commemoration of Saints Yermil, Stratonicus of Syngidon and the martyr Peter of Ania. According to the old style, Saint Melania of Rome and Saint Basil the Great are honored. Ukrainian ancestors treated these saints with respect and believed that their prayers contribute to well-being.

A generous evening

The generous evening or holiday of Vasyl and Melanka is a unique combination of Christian and pagan traditions. On this evening, Ukrainians prepare a generous kutyu, sow grain to their neighbors, wishing for abundance, and arrange cheerful costume performances with the characters of Melanka, Vasyl and Koza.

The holiday coincides with the Old New Year, a remnant of the Julian calendar. Although Ukraine now lives according to the Gregorian calendar, the tradition of celebrating the "old" New Year remains popular.

World holidays

January 13 has its own unique events in the world. Among them:

  • World Depression Day is a reminder of the importance of mental health.
  • Rubber Duck Day is a celebration of a children's toy that has become a symbol of fun.
  • Father's Day in Islam is a celebration of the role of fathers in Muslim families.

  • Francois Mansard is a French architect who popularized attics.
  • Orlando Bloom and Liam Hemsworth are actors known for their roles in Hollywood films.
  • Connor McDavid is a world hockey star.

In Ukraine, this day became the birthday of prominent figures such as chemist Mykola Beketov, journalist Yevhen Onatsky and aviator Levko Matsievich.
