According to the new style, January 13 is the day of commemoration of Saints Yermil, Stratonicus of Syngidon and the martyr Peter of Ania. According to the old style, Saint Melania of Rome and Saint Basil the Great are honored. A generous evening
The generous evening or holiday of Vasyl and Melanka is a unique combination of Christian and pagan traditions. On this evening, Ukrainians prepare a generous kutyu, sow grain to their neighbors, wishing for abundance, and arrange cheerful costume performances with the characters of Melanka, Vasyl and Koza.
The holiday coincides with the Old New Year, a remnant of the Julian calendar. Although Ukraine now lives according to the Gregorian calendar, the tradition of celebrating the "old" New Year remains popular.
World holidays
