Harvard gastroenterologist Saurabh Sethi, who has been studying gut health for over a decade, shared a ranking of fruits based on their effects on the digestive system. As it turns out, not all fruits are equally beneficial — some can even be harmful.
The doctor called overripe bananas the worst for the intestines. During the ripening process, they lose most of their dietary fiber and resistant starch, but they contain more sugar. This provokes spikes in blood glucose and does not contribute to the nutrition of beneficial bacteria. In contrast, slightly unripe bananas act as a prebiotic and support microflora.
Sethi listed apples, pears, melons, grapes, and oranges as fruits with moderate benefits. Despite their high vitamin C content, citrus fruits can also have a negative impact: scientific studies have linked excessive consumption to an increased risk of skin cancer.
The doctor says blueberries and pomegranates are the most beneficial for the gut. They are rich in antioxidants, reduce inflammation, support cardiovascular health, and help fight free radicals.
The specialist emphasizes: the choice of fruit directly affects the state of the digestive system and can reduce the risk of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.
