What holidays are celebrated on August 19: international dates, Ukrainian traditions and church customs

Several important dates are celebrated around the world and in Ukraine on August 19. This day has interesting folk signs, is associated with Orthodox traditions, and is considered special for warriors.

International holidays

The UN has designated August 19 as Humanitarian Aid Day. Its purpose is to emphasize the importance of international cooperation and assistance to countries affected by crises, disasters, and wars.

Another holiday that is well known to photographers is World Photography Day. Various countries hold exhibitions, competitions, and creative events dedicated to the art of photography.

Holidays in Ukraine

In Ukraine, Beekeeper's Day is celebrated on August 19, a professional holiday for beekeepers. On this day, it is customary to congratulate those who are engaged in the production of honey, because without their work this product would not be available in stores.

August 19 is also associated with famous names: actor Borys Mirus, writers Oles Donchenko and Maria Halych, as well as Hero of Ukraine, marine Vitaliy Skakun, were born on this day.

Church events

According to the old calendar, this day was the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord, one of the greatest Orthodox holidays. In churches, fruits and vegetables of the new harvest were blessed.

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine now follows a new calendar and commemorates the memory of the Righteous Andrew Stratylates and the Two Thousand Martyrs on August 19. He is considered the patron saint of warriors, and prayers are addressed to him for defenders and missing persons.

Folk signs

Our ancestors carefully observed nature on this day. It was believed that:

  • if the flowers close during the day, it will rain;

  • dry weather portends a dry September;

  • cold wind – early autumn;

  • A lot of dew means a rich harvest of oats.

After the Transfiguration, people traditionally ate apples, collected honey, and dug up beets, carrots, and new potatoes for homemade borscht.

What not to do on August 19

According to ancient beliefs, this day is considered unfavorable for financial matters, trade, and repairs. It is also not recommended to share plans for the future, do needlework, and quarrel with loved ones - otherwise you can lose the well-being of the family.
