What holiday is today, who celebrates their name day and what you can't do

Church holiday

Today, Orthodox Christians honor the memory of Archbishop Cyril of Jerusalem. It is customary for believers to pray for health and healing from illnesses. In the folk calendar, this day is known as Cyril's Day, when peasants began spring work and nature awakened after winter.

Folk omens and prohibitions on March 18

Our ancestors believed that on March 18, one should not cut down trees, trample grass, or harm nature - this could bring misfortune. Also, one should not consume meat and dairy products on this day, since Lent is in progress.

Weather changes were associated with folk signs:

  • If the starlings don't arrive that day, the frosts will last for a long time.
  • If ducks dive into the water, it will soon get warmer.
  • The first flies and mosquitoes - to a rich harvest of berries and mushrooms.
  • If the birches have turned green, then spring will be early and warm.

Angel Day March 18

Danylo, Dmytro, Kirill, Trofim, and Natalia celebrate their name day on this day.

If we follow the old calendar, today we also celebrate Adrian, George, David, Yegor, Ivan, Konstantin, Luke, Mark, Nicholas, Theodore, and John.

March 18 is a day rich in events and traditions. Believers honor Saint Cyril, environmentalists celebrate World Recycling Day, and the public watches for signs that herald spring weather. Birthdays are celebrated, and many prominent figures have been born on this day in history.
