Will the Russians be able to capture Chasiv Yar within three weeks?

According to analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian troops may not have enough time to fully capture Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region by May 9. They will probably only be able to enter the eastern part of the city.

The ISW report suggests that the military command’s intention to capture Chasiv Yar so quickly may indicate their confidence in the speed of the occupation. However, analysts note that this may be complicated by the shortage of ammunition and air defenses in Ukraine. It is likely that Russian forces are trying to take advantage of this to advance more quickly.

According to ISW estimates, Russian troops have so far only reached the eastern part of the Kanal neighborhood in the east of the city.

Analysts also note that the Russian command often sets unrealistic goals for advancement. A Russian military blogger expressed hope that Russian troops will be able to simply enter the New Microdistrict in the southeast of Chasov Yar by May 9.

ISW emphasizes that the Russian military command will continue offensive operations at Chasiv Yar. However, due to the lack of artillery and air defense assets in Ukraine, the Russians may advance faster than before.

Recall that the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi stated on Sunday, April 14, that the Russians had received an order to capture Chasiv Yar by May 9. Volodymyr Zelenskyy's evening briefing confirms that the situation in the Donetsk areas is becoming more complicated.
