Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker is one of the most revered figures in Christianity. He is a real historical figure, the bishop of Myra in Lycia, who became famous for his kindness, mercy, and help to the needy. Many sources mention his great achievements, including saving people and miracles of resurrection. In the Christian world, Nicholas is considered the patron saint of the poor and unjustly convicted, and in Ukraine he is addressed for hope and intercession.
The saint also holds a special place in the Orthodox tradition. It is with his name that a winter holiday is associated, which gives children gifts and a sense of wonder. For adults, this day is associated with prayer, good deeds, and inner warmth.
When do Ukrainians celebrate St. Nicholas Day?
Saint Nicholas has two memorable dates. In the spring — May 9 according to the new style (May 22 according to the old style) — the transfer of his relics, known among the people as Nicholas of Spring, is celebrated.
And the main winter holiday falls in December. Many generations of Ukrainians are accustomed to celebrating it on December 19 — according to the old calendar. However, after the transition to the new church calendar in 2023, the date changed. All fixed holidays were moved forward 13 days, so St. Nicholas Day now officially falls on December 6. This year it falls on a Saturday.
Regardless of whether Ukrainians celebrate on December 6 or 19, the holiday is not a state holiday and does not provide for an additional day off.
How Saint Nicholas Day is celebrated and what is forbidden to do
Children in Ukraine eagerly await St. Nicholas, who brings gifts under their pillows. The tradition stems from legends about the saint's generosity, who helped poor families and cared for children.
In the Christian tradition, it is customary to pray, attend church, and do good deeds on this day. Charitable initiatives are one of the most important parts of the holiday: thousands of Ukrainians become “secret Nicholas” for orphans, low-income families, or military personnel.
At the same time, there are certain prohibitions. On December 6, it is not recommended to quarrel, work hard, do cleaning, needlework, or do any work that requires significant effort. It is forbidden to envy or wish evil on others. On this day, it is important to unite, preserve good feelings, and believe in miracles — especially during war.
What to give a child for St. Nicholas Day
Children often write letters to the Miracle Worker, but if the wish is too expensive or vague, adults can choose a gift at their discretion. In 2026, the most popular gifts for children will be:
books by age and interests;
toys, dolls, cars;
sweets;
construction sets and puzzles;
creative kits;
tablets, smart watches, children's quadcopters;
sports gifts - balls, roller skates, skateboards;
board games.
Depending on family customs, the surprise can be placed under the pillow or near the Christmas tree.
