Europe or the USA: who will take responsibility for the security of Ukraine

The team of US President Donald Trump demonstrates readiness to consider the issue of providing security guarantees to Ukraine. This is reported by Bloomberg, citing a high-ranking official. Despite Trump's initial skepticism about active US involvement, his administration has recognized the need to engage in the process to ensure the credibility of future security agreements.

European government officials are actively convincing the Trump administration of the need for US participation in future peacekeeping efforts. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi emphasizes the importance of including American troops in any peacekeeping forces, because European support is not enough to deter Russia.

However, Washington, although showing openness to discussion, makes it clear that the main burden of costs and responsibility must be borne by Europe. In particular, Trump expects the active role of European countries in the financing and implementation of any peace agreement.

The Trump administration, according to the source, recognizes the inevitability of providing security guarantees to Ukraine. However, the White House's position limits the direct involvement of the US military, emphasizing economic sanctions against Russia and reconstruction of Ukraine at the expense of the private sector.

This strategy raises concerns among European leaders. For example, French President Emmanuel Macron proposed the deployment of European peacekeeping troops. But such initiatives could create a split in NATO if the US does not actively participate.

Trump has not yet presented a clear position on peace efforts. His warnings to Russia about increasing economic pressure remain at the level of statements, and Moscow shows no willingness to make concessions.

While Kyiv awaits the arrival of US special representative Keith Kellogg to discuss the details, the uncertainty in Washington's position creates difficulties for European allies. The leaders of NATO and Ukraine emphasize that without strong security guarantees, there is a risk of a new turn of the war.

Despite a certain willingness of the Trump administration to participate in ensuring the security of Ukraine, its position may leave Europe with the need to take on greater responsibility. Zelensky insists that only the participation of American troops in the peacekeeping forces can guarantee confidence in the agreement.

Whether Washington will be able to reconcile its interests with the expectations of Kyiv and its European allies is an open question.
