The European Union can "emergency suspend" the supply of Ukrainian agricultural products to its market.
And yes, today the European Commission confirmed the information that it will continue the duty-free import of agricultural products from Ukraine. At the same time, it is proposed to introduce a protective mechanism for European farmers.
"Today, the European Commission proposed to extend the suspension of import duties and quotas on Ukrainian exports to the EU for one more year [until June 2025], while at the same time strengthening the protection of sensitive EU agricultural products. This is done in accordance with the EU's obligations to support Ukraine as long as it will be needed," said EC Deputy Chairman Margaritis Schinas.
The so-called emergency suspension mechanism is provided for the most sensitive products - poultry products, eggs and sugar. It will be introduced if the volume of Ukrainian imports exceeds the level of 2022-2023.
The EU official recognized the adverse impact of the cancellation of customs duties for Ukraine on the economy of a number of EU countries.
Therefore, the new mechanism should guarantee "the possibility of taking quick measures to correct the situation in the event of significant disruptions on the EU market or on the markets of one or more member states."
