In the period from December 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine recorded the execution of 32 Ukrainian prisoners of war, which was the largest number compared to previous periods.
These findings are contained in the Mission's report released on Tuesday, March 26. The document covers the period from December 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024 and is based on interviews with 60 Ukrainian soldiers released from captivity. Testimony reflects appalling treatment and poor conditions in captivity, including limited contact with family members, as well as problems with food and medical care.
It is noted that the Russian army continues to use torture, ill-treatment and other violations of human rights. In particular, the document records previously established practices of torture, incommunicado detention and forced disappearances.
Among other things, the report contains information about interviews with 44 Russian prisoners of war who gave evidence of torture and ill-treatment in temporary detention centers after leaving the war zone.
The mission also confirms information about the violence of the Russian military against residents of the occupied territories of Ukraine, including the killing of civilians and restrictions on freedom of expression.
