The situation at the front is becoming increasingly difficult for Ukraine, and this forces the US to take serious measures to support its ally. According to the German magazine Focus, experts are anxiously watching the ongoing offensive of the Russian armed forces, especially in the Kharkiv region.
But now there is hope: During his visit to Kyiv this week, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the US would not encourage Ukraine to attack targets in Russia - but ultimately decisions on such matters should be made by the country itself.
These words can be considered as permission to use American weapons on the territory of Russia. For a long time it was considered a big taboo.
"According to international law, Ukraine has the right to attack targets in Russia," explains military expert Gerhard Mangott. - However, this will significantly increase the tension between NATO and Russia; we will enter a gray area with the risk of an escalation of the conflict that no one can predict or control."
"The fact that Secretary of State Blinken points out that Ukraine itself decides on the targets of its military attacks is explained by the fact that Russia is carrying out attacks in the north not from Ukrainian, but from Russian territory," - believes political scientist Thomas Eger from the University of Cologne.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff of the US Armed Forces no longer rejects sending NATO instructors to Ukraine. The U.S. has so far rejected the idea, but "in time we may get there," Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. said. The logistics needed to train Ukrainian soldiers abroad require a lot of time, which is not available in Ukraine. Therefore, Zelenskyi's government appealed to the United States and NATO with a request to train 150,000 recruits closer to the front line. NATO instructors in Ukraine will be a prime target for the Russian military, so they must be thoroughly protected by air defense systems that are lacking elsewhere.
