The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, categorically opposed the initiative of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to hold a telephone conversation with the President of Russia, Volodymyr Putin. According to Reuters , citing a source in the Office of the President of Ukraine, Zelensky personally tried to dissuade Sholtz from this step, but without success.
"The chancellor informed our president that he plans to talk to Putin. The president said it would only help Putin by reducing his isolation. Putin does not want real peace, he wants a break. A conversation with him will allow Putin to change the situation and continue the war. This will not bring peace because Putin will simply repeat the lies he has been telling for years, giving the impression that he is no longer isolated,” the source said.
But, as we can see, Scholz ignored Zelensky's appeal and allowed Putin.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin says that Putin and Scholz agreed that their aides would be in touch after the phone conversation that took place. The German Cabinet of Ministers also announced the continuation of contacts with the Kremlin earlier.
