In Ukraine, a state program of free preventive examinations "Health Screening 40+" has been launched on January 1, 2026. The initiative is aimed at people over the age of 40 and is based on the recommendations of evidence-based medicine. Its goal is the early detection of cardiovascular, metabolic and renal diseases, which often develop without pronounced symptoms.
As reported by the Center for Public Health, the duration of the screening is from 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the volume of medical services. Special preparation for the examinations is not required. At the same time, 30 minutes before the visit, it is recommended to avoid intense physical activity, not to smoke and not to drink caffeinated beverages, so that the indicators are as accurate as possible.
During the appointment, the doctor will examine you and measure your blood pressure at least twice. The average value is used to determine your risk of hypertension, a condition that is one of the main causes of stroke and heart attack, but often has no symptoms.
A separate part of the program is laboratory diagnostics. Patients are given a free lipid profile to assess the risk of atherosclerosis, as well as a glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test, which shows the average blood sugar level over the past three months and helps detect prediabetes or diabetes.
If medically indicated, additional measurements of electrolytes (sodium, potassium), creatinine, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) may be performed to assess kidney function. A urine test for albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) may also be performed to detect early signs of kidney damage.
Laboratory test results are promised to be provided no later than 72 hours after the visit.
The Central Health Center emphasizes that regular screening after the age of 40 allows for timely detection of diseases and prevention of serious complications. The program is funded by the state, and registration and organization of services will be carried out through digital services, in particular the "Diya" application.
