European countries are actively considering the idea of creating a special air force mission called “Air Shield”, which would allow to protect Ukrainian skies from Russian missiles and drones without formal involvement of NATO. This involves the deployment of 120 fighter jets from European Union countries, which would patrol the airspace over Kyiv and the western regions of Ukraine. The main goal is to protect civilians, critical infrastructure and avoid further destruction of civilian objects.
The idea of creating an “Air Shield” is not new, but it has received new impetus after recent statements by European officials and the publication of relevant documents. According to European military experts, such a step would ensure the security of cities and critical infrastructure, which are regularly targeted by Russian attacks. Interestingly, a special document presented to European defense ministries emphasizes that such a format of support would have a greater military and political effect than the deployment of even 10,000 European soldiers on Ukrainian soil.
However, the key obstacle to the implementation of this idea is still the fear of a possible direct clash with Russia. That is why the patrol zone is planned only over Kyiv, the western regions of Ukraine and is remote from the front line. European officials are confident that this will reduce the risks of incidents and escalation of the conflict. On the other hand, Moscow has repeatedly stated that any involvement of Western military aircraft in Ukrainian skies will be regarded as direct European participation in the war.
Supporters of the initiative are confident that now is the time to act. According to their calculations, the fighters will be able to effectively counter Russian attacks, and the risk to the pilots will be minimal. At the same time, at the level of the EU political leadership, they emphasize that the decision has not yet been made, and its prospects will be actively discussed in the near future, including at the EU summit, which is taking place this week.
Thus, the idea of an “Air Shield” is both attractive and complex: on the one hand, it can radically strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities and protect the civilian population, and on the other, it carries the risk of further escalation with the Kremlin. Whether Europe is ready for such a step will become clear in the near future.
