17-year-old boy gets 5 years in prison for assaulting shooting range employee

Khmelnytskyi City District Court has sentenced an 18-year-old boy who committed a robbery at a shooting range in a local park at the age of 17. The young man was found guilty under Part 4 of Article 187 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - robbery committed with the use of violence dangerous to life during martial law.

According to court documents, the incident occurred in early July 2024. The teenager came to a shooting range in one of the parks in Khmelnytskyi in the evening and demanded to be let inside after the facility closed. When the guard refused, the boy hit him twice in the face, and then, threatening him with an object resembling a knife, forced him to hand over the pistols that were used in the shooting range.

After being refused, the attacker independently went behind the counter, took the airsoft gun and left the premises. A few minutes later he returned, again threatened the employee with a knife and demanded a mobile phone. Having received it, he took two more guns. The total amount of damage amounted to more than 31 thousand hryvnias.

The court found all the circumstances of the crime proven. The accused fully admitted his guilt, repented and cooperated with the investigation. The prosecutor requested that he be sentenced to 8 years in prison, but the court, taking into account his age, sincere remorse and lack of criminal records, applied Article 69 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced him to five years in prison.

The defendant was also ordered to pay about 8,000 hryvnia in procedural costs. The verdict can be appealed to the Khmelnytskyi Court of Appeal within 30 days.
