$3,000 for acquittal: judge from Dnipropetrovsk region caught taking bribes

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine, together with the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, exposed a judge of the City District Court of Dnipropetrovsk Region for receiving illegal benefits.

According to the investigation, the judge demanded a bribe from the accused in the criminal proceedings for an acquittal. After receiving the agreed amount, he fulfilled his promise and made the necessary decision.

Law enforcement officers searched the judge's residence and workplace. Detectives determined that he received the money in a rather unusual way — in a bag of apples. The amount of the ill-gotten gain amounted to about $3,000.

He has now been charged under Part 3 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — receiving unlawful benefit by an official, combined with extortion. The sanction of the article provides for up to 10 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property and deprivation of the right to hold certain positions.

The investigation is ongoing, investigators are establishing all the circumstances and possible accomplices of the corruption scheme.
