St. Gerasim Jordanian Day: History and Significance
Reverend Gerasim lived in the 5th century. He was born in Asia Minor, in Lycia, but devoted his life to the monastic service on the banks of the Jordan River. There he founded the monastery and became known as a spiritual mentor and an example of true Christian humility.
The saint was a harsh ascetic - he faded, prayed, fed only with bread and water. According to legend, it was Gerasim who healed the wounded lion, who afterwards became his loyal companion and even assisted in monastery. This lion became a symbol of humility, strength and gratitude.
Saint Gerasim died in 475. His memory is honored as an example of unwavering faith and spiritual devotion.
