A court in the Transcarpathian region has sentenced a 70-year-old man who beat his wife with a wooden stick and then kept her on a metal chain for more than nine days. This is stated in the decision of the Irshava District Court (case number 301/1445/25).
The court found that a resident of Transcarpathia beat his 68-year-old wife, inflicting numerous blows on her back, shoulders and buttocks. The woman received abrasions and bruises. A week after the beating, the man tied her to furniture in the house with a metal chain about seven meters long. The woman could not move freely for more than nine days until the police intervened in the situation.
In court, the man explained his actions by arguing with his wife over her alleged alcohol abuse. According to him, he chained his wife to furniture so that she could not leave the house and buy alcohol again.
At the hearing, the man pleaded guilty and stated that he was remorseful. His wife confirmed that there had been a conflict, but said that she had forgiven her husband and that he had stopped beating her while he was being held in chains.
The court found the man guilty of unlawful deprivation of liberty and causing bodily harm. He was sentenced to two years in prison, but it was replaced by a one-year and six-month suspended sentence.
