A new report from OnePoll has revealed alarming figures: the average adult spends about six hours a day glued to their smartphone, which adds up to 88 days a year — almost a quarter of the year is spent scrolling the web.
Generation Z spends the most time on their phones, spending over six and a half hours a day. The study also found a number of psychological consequences of this lifestyle.
Alarming numbers:
-
10% admitted to spending more than 12 hours a day in front of their phone screens;
-
50% feel that their “social battery” is being drained due to the amount of time spent online (among Generation Z — 62%);
-
52% feel overwhelmed by the pressure of constantly being up to date on social media;
-
59% said that the time spent on the phone has increased over the past year;
-
47% are “always online” and the flow of messages they receive is “constant” (60%);
-
64% are nostalgic for the 90s and miss the times when people communicated without smartphones;
-
32% put off making plans with friends due to digital overload, and 18% can't even imagine organizing meetings due to fatigue from online activity.
Time spent in person has decreased by 35% over the past 24 years, while time spent on the phone has more than doubled (by 54%).
These are truly scary numbers on a global scale. Mindless scrolling through social media takes up time that could be used for real life, development, and good deeds.
