Doctors have warned about a little-known but dangerous symptom of high cholesterol - pain in the arms and legs. This manifestation can indicate serious problems with blood vessels, including the development of a condition that, in extreme cases, leads to amputation of limbs.
According to doctors, excess cholesterol may not cause noticeable symptoms for a long time, which makes timely diagnosis difficult. However, sometimes the body signals a problem with pain in the limbs. This occurs due to the accumulation of deposits in the vessels containing cholesterol, fats, calcium, proteins and other substances. Over time, the walls of the vessels narrow and harden, atherosclerosis develops.
One of the consequences of this process can be peripheral arterial disease. Its characteristic symptom is a sharp pain in the legs or arms, which intensifies when walking or running. The person has to stop for the unpleasant sensations to disappear.
Experts emphasize that such episodes are a good reason to get checked. Without timely treatment and control of cholesterol levels, the pathology can lead to serious complications, including the loss of a limb. Doctors urge regular checks of the condition of blood vessels and cholesterol levels, as its excess significantly increases the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
