A case of hantavirus infection has been registered in Sumy in a local resident living in a private house. Currently, doctors and epidemiologists are carrying out the necessary anti-epidemic measures, conducting medical surveillance of contact persons, and investigating possible routes of infection. This was reported by the Sumy Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Experts explain that hantavirus is an acute infectious disease that affects the blood vessels, kidneys and lungs and can have a severe course. The main carriers of the virus are wild and domestic rodents. A person usually becomes infected while cleaning basements, attics or utility rooms, inhaling dust contaminated with the excretions of mice and rats.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention emphasizes that Sumy region is one of the endemic areas for hantavirus infection. In the autumn-winter period, the risk of the disease increases, as rodents move en masse into residential buildings in search of warmth and food.
Doctors urge residents of the region to be especially careful when cleaning non-residential premises, use personal protective equipment, regularly carry out wet cleaning and avoid contact with rodents. In case of flu-like symptoms, weakness, fever or muscle pain, you should immediately consult a doctor.
