The administration of US President Donald Trump has officially addressed Ukraine with a diplomatic demarche after the attack on a Russian oil facility near Novorossiysk. This was announced by Ukrainian Ambassador to the US Olga Stefanishyna during a briefing, commenting on the reaction of the American side.
According to the diplomat, the State Department expressed concern that the strikes on infrastructure in the Novorossiysk area affected American economic interests related to the transit of Kazakh oil. This is not about prohibiting attacks on Russian military facilities in general, but specifically about the risks to US business interests in the region.
The ambassador clarified that the Ukrainian side took the signal into account. At the same time, she emphasized: Ukraine is operating in conditions of a full-scale war, where every logistical and energy node of the enemy is considered an element of military infrastructure.
In late November, Ukrainian drones struck the port infrastructure of Novorossiysk. The attack damaged facilities, including a pipeline that transports Kazakh oil to the Black Sea. Export volumes subsequently fell sharply, affecting companies with American capital.
Washington emphasized that it has significant economic interests in Kazakhstan, while Ukraine currently does not have similar scale of investments. Stefanishyna noted that over more than three decades of independence, Ukraine has not become as attractive to big American business, and this, in her opinion, is a strategic problem.
The situation is unfolding against the backdrop of a protracted war and difficult negotiations over a possible settlement of the conflict. The peace track with the participation of the United States has not yet shown a breakthrough, and hostilities continue.
The Ukrainian side also insists on increasing sanctions pressure on Russia. Representatives of Kyiv have repeatedly stated that the lack of speed in decisions in the US Congress may be perceived by the Kremlin as a signal of weakness.
In turn, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in comments to American media, emphasized that he expects continued strategic support from the United States and more decisive steps to deter Moscow.
The diplomatic demarche became another marker that the war in Ukraine is increasingly intersecting with global economic interests, creating additional challenges for partnerships.
