An unusual find was discovered in the capital's Podil - over 10 tons of human remains in containers. Information about this quickly spread through the Ukrainian media and caused quite a stir. However, as it turned out, this is not a crime, but an archaeological legacy left behind by scientists.
According to the official explanation of the Kyiv Scientific and Methodological Center for the Protection of Monuments and the State Historical and Architectural Reserve "Ancient Kyiv", the found remains are human bones from excavations on Shchekavitsa Mountain, where there was once an ancient cemetery. Mostly complete skeletons. In total, there are over a thousand remains.
The building near which the containers were found is located on the territory of the reserve and previously served as a base for the Podolsk archaeological expedition of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Representatives of the Institute confirmed that all the bones have already been examined and are of no archaeological value, therefore they should be reburied.
The reserve is currently awaiting approval from the Ministry of Culture to carry out the procedure. Ancient Kyiv notes that the scale of the find is impressive, and they hope for a quick response from the relevant authorities to ensure a dignified reburial.
This situation has attracted attention not only because of the number of remains, but also because of the ethical issues in archaeology — whether human remains should be stored in basements and containers for decades, and who is responsible for their future fate.
