In the village of Zarig, Orzhytska community, Lubny district, a local historian came across a fragment of a mammoth tusk while excavating clay. The Center for the Protection and Research of Archaeological Monuments reported the find.
The find was examined by the Center's specialist Mykhailo Kovalenko. According to his assessment, the fragment was close to the surface, but due to erosion it lost its museum value. According to the researchers, the fragment was transported by glacial processes along with clay loess.
This find is not an isolated one: fragments of tusks and mammoth bones were also found near the Tarasiv Brick Factory in 2005. Some of the materials are occasionally transferred to the Poltava Museum of Local Lore named after Vasyl Krychevsky and the Orzhytskyi District Museum of Local Lore.
Archaeologists emphasize that such accidental finds do not always indicate the presence of Paleolithic sites. However, each fragment can be an impetus for new research and shed light on the ancient history of the region.
