The Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office has launched a pre-trial investigation into the fact of animal cruelty after an incident in the Solomianskyi district of the capital.
Near one of the residential buildings, local residents found a tied bag in a garbage can. Inside, among the household garbage, were five newborn Staffordshire Terrier puppies. Unfortunately, one puppy died, and four rescued animals were transferred by volunteers to a clinic, where they are receiving treatment and care.
Law enforcement officers and dog handlers quickly located the alleged owner of the animals. During a search of his apartment, they found a dog with signs of postpartum depression. The man admitted that he had thrown out the newborn puppies, believing them to be dead.
The body of the deceased puppy was removed and sent for examination to determine the cause of death. A pre-trial investigation is ongoing under Part 3 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - animal cruelty against two or more animals, which led to their death.
The sanction of this article provides for imprisonment for a term of 5 to 8 years. Law enforcement officers continue to investigate all the circumstances of the case.
