In Zhytomyr region, work is underway to eliminate the consequences of a powerful explosion that occurred on the evening of July 2 on the strategically important M-06 highway "Kyiv-Chop". According to official data, the event occurred near the village of Berezyna, Hlybochytsky community, at about 6:00 p.m. Dead and injured people were recorded.
The event was reported by Deputy Head of the Office of the President Viktor Mykyta. According to him, immediately after the incident, representatives of the regional and local authorities arrived at the scene, coordinating the work of the emergency headquarters. All necessary services are involved: rescuers, doctors, police, psychologists. Heavy equipment is working, food and water have been delivered for the participants of the rescue operation.
The head of the Zhytomyr regional military administration, Vitaliy Bunechko, clarified that two explosions occurred in a row. The force of the explosions was such that elements of the road infrastructure were damaged. Part of the road is blocked, traffic is complicated.
The exact number of dead and injured is currently being determined. Preliminary estimates are at least several victims. The government promises to provide the necessary support for the victims and their families.
The situation is under the personal control of President Volodymyr Zelensky. It is expected that representatives of the central government may arrive on the scene in the near future.
The causes of the explosion have not been officially announced yet. Law enforcement officers are working on several versions, including sabotage. An investigation has been launched.
