A unique operation was performed in Lviv that helped save the life of 6-year-old Polina Bidyuk, who suffered from a rare disease called Wilkie syndrome. The syndrome, which is diagnosed in only one in a thousand patients, made it difficult for her to eat and led to a loss of 4 kg in a few weeks.
Polina from Khmelnytskyi began vomiting after every meal, and her parents sought help. At first, doctors suspected appendicitis, but later, after an examination, she was diagnosed with Wilkie syndrome, a disease that causes intestinal obstruction due to compression of the duodenum by the mesenteric artery.
Given the seriousness of the situation, when medical treatment did not help, Lviv doctors decided to resort to surgical intervention using the Da Vinci Si robotic system. The operation became extremely difficult due to the location of the organs in the critical zone, because the pancreas, liver, and bile ducts are located next to the duodenum.
Over the course of two hours, surgeons performed the operation, creating a bypass for food by connecting a loose loop of intestine to the top of the duodenum. This allowed food to pass unhindered into the small intestine, bypassing the pinched area.
Now Polina is recovering quickly, has started eating well and is regaining her weight. Thanks to robotic surgery and the high professionalism of the doctors, her life was saved.
