A shocking incident occurred in Khmelnytskyi on January 15, 2025. A 36-year-old local resident gave birth to a boy at home, wrapped the child in a towel and, without providing any assistance, threw the newborn into a trash can. The baby was discovered by passers-by near the trash cans, after which police officers, forensic experts and doctors urgently went to the scene.
The incident became known at around 7:50 p.m., when a group of passers-by contacted the police with a report that they had found a newborn baby near the garbage cans on Ternopilska Street. Fortunately, the women and men who witnessed this horrific situation immediately reported the find to law enforcement and called an ambulance.
The child was immediately taken to the Khmelnytskyi City Children's Hospital, where doctors in the intensive care unit provided the necessary assistance. The baby is currently under the supervision of doctors.
Thanks to quick operational and investigative measures, the police soon identified the woman who left her baby in the trash. She turned out to be a 36-year-old local resident who gave birth at home without going to doctors or medical institutions. After the baby was born, the woman wrapped it in a towel and threw it in a plastic bag in the trash.
Law enforcement officials report that the woman in labor was also hospitalized, and her condition is currently stable.
Investigators of the Khmelnytskyi District Police Department have initiated criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – “Leaving in Danger.” According to this article, for such actions, the offender may receive restrictions or imprisonment for a term of up to three years.
Thanks to the quick response of concerned citizens and doctors, the baby was able to avoid the worst consequences. The child, who was thrown into the trash in critical condition, received the necessary assistance and is now out of danger. However, the baby's health remains under constant medical supervision.
The police continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident. All facts are being established that could help explain the motives of the woman who left her child unattended. However, investigators have already indicated that such cases are extremely dangerous for both the child's health and the family as a whole. The criminal proceedings indicate the seriousness of the situation, and, according to forecasts, this may lead to severe sanctions for the offender.
This case became a vivid reminder of the importance of a mother's responsibility to her child and how important it is to seek medical help during childbirth, as well as the need to seek support in a timely manner if a woman is unable to care for her baby on her own.
We hope that everything will be fine with the baby and that he will receive all the necessary care, and the responsibility for leaving him in the trash will lie with the person who committed this terrible act.
