On the morning of May 3, a tragedy occurred in one of the settlements of the Yaskivska community in the Odessa region - a 43-year-old woman contacted law enforcement officers with a report of the sudden death of her nine-month-old daughter. At first glance, it was an accident. But during the initial investigative actions, the police discovered circumstances that may indicate a serious crime.
Law enforcement officers recorded signs of physical injuries on the child, and the mother's behavior aroused suspicion. According to preliminary conclusions of experts, the child's death occurred as a result of asphyxia - strangulation. The police assume that the woman, in a state of emotional breakdown, could have used force on the baby, who had been crying for a long time.
The woman was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Currently, a statement of suspicion is being prepared under Part 2, Part 2, Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - intentional murder of a minor. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for a term of 10 to 15 years or life imprisonment.
As part of the criminal proceedings, a set of forensic medical examinations has been ordered, which should definitively establish the cause of the child's death and confirm or deny the mother's involvement in causing the fatal injuries.
The tragedy exposed another problem: the psycho-emotional state of women in the postpartum period, which is often ignored. In many cases, the lack of psychological help and support can have catastrophic consequences.
The police are continuing the investigation.
