An indictment has been filed in the Sumy region against a 22-year-old resident of Konotop district. The woman is accused of malicious failure to fulfill parental duties, which led to the death of a young child.
According to the investigation, the tragedy occurred on September 21, 2025. The mother left her one and a half year old son alone in the crib and went to a party where she drank alcohol. The child was left unattended for several hours.
While his mother was away, the boy got tangled in a shoelace with a cross, which caught on a metal screw. The child was unable to free himself. A forensic medical examination determined that death occurred as a result of mechanical asphyxiation.
Experts also confirmed that the mother was intoxicated at the time of the incident. The alcohol level in her body was 1.23 ppm.
The investigation established that the child had been under the supervision of the child welfare service since the first months of his life due to inadequate living and upbringing conditions. The father did not participate in the child's life.
The pre-trial investigation has been completed. The indictment has been submitted to the court for consideration on the merits. Separately, law enforcement agencies are investigating the actions of children's service officials who were aware of the situation in the family but failed to take measures to protect the child.
