American neuroscientist Baibing Chen analyzed data from elderly people with perfect memories and found that their secret is active social connections. In a TikTok video, the doctor said that exercise and proper nutrition are important, but the real "trainer" for the brain is communication.
According to Chen, older adults who maintain strong social relationships have a more developed anterior cingulate cortex, which is responsible for emotions, attention, and social interaction. Communication activates brain networks responsible for memory, attention, and empathy, and also reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol and increases levels of oxytocin and dopamine, which help preserve the physical structure of the brain.
Dr. Chen advises not to limit yourself to daily crosswords or Sudoku. It is much more effective to call friends, meet with loved ones, laugh, and stay socially active.
These observations are supported by the Alzheimer's Society, which states that loneliness can increase the risk of developing dementia by 60%. Although the exact mechanisms are still being studied, active communication remains one of the most reliable ways to maintain cognitive health.
