At a time when every support from the world is extremely important for Ukraine, British actress Carey Mulligan has publicly spoken out in defense of Ukrainian identity and children who are being forcibly deported by Russia.
The star gave an emotional speech at an event in London dedicated to the tragedy of the deportation and published a column in a leading British media outlet. In it, she directly called the kidnapping and forced re-education of Ukrainian children a war crime and stressed that Russia is trying to erase the Ukrainian language and culture.
Mulligan cited the story of a 16-year-old girl from Kherson who was rescued after returning to Ukraine from a camp where teenagers were forced to dig trenches and trained to use weapons. She said parents lose their children, and children lose their own identity.
The actress works with War Child, an organization that helps Ukrainian children. She called on world leaders to immediately address this tragedy and return every child home. The symbol of the action was an installation of 19,546 paper dolls - that's how many children are estimated to be currently illegally in Russia.
