European officials have expressed concern about Donald Trump’s stance on Ukraine after meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House. According to Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources, some European officials noted that after these talks “Europe will collectively try to pick up the pieces.” They are concerned that Trump is likely changing his position on Ukraine, increasing pressure on Kyiv and avoiding direct communication with Zelensky.
The official, who spoke to Bloomberg on condition of anonymity, said that “Trump has decided to sell Ukraine,” referring to his possible withdrawal from supporting Kyiv in its conflict with Russia. Other Europeans also noted that the skirmish between Trump and Zelensky in the White House looked like an ambush.
Some Trump advisers, however, believe that the American people are still willing to support the war in Ukraine, but others argue that the United States is likely to increase pressure on Kyiv in the future. The Trump administration is likely to avoid direct contact with Zelensky and focus on other ways to pressure Ukraine to achieve a peaceful settlement.
After an Oval Office incident in which Trump said Zelensky was not ready for peace, the Ukrainian leader left the White House early. Trump also wrote on Truth Social that Zelensky could return when he was ready for peace, leaving a sense of tension between the two leaders.
Meanwhile, journalists note that the agreement on rare earth minerals between the US and Ukraine was not signed after the meeting. This further increases the tension in bilateral relations. At the same time, President Zelensky thanked the US for its support and stated that Ukraine continues to work to achieve a just and lasting peace.
