The Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost interest in the specially developed American high-precision GLSDB (Guided Bomb Unit-53/B) aerial bombs, as they have fallen victim to Russian electronic warfare (EW) systems, Defense One reports, citing the US Department of Defense.
According to a Pentagon representative, the Armed Forces of Ukraine is no longer interested in these weapons, although the bombs were actively used until February 2024.
And this is not the first Western GPS-guided weapon to be affected by Russian EW. In March, it was reported that the effectiveness of the Excalibur precision-guided munition had dropped from 70% to 6% after the Russians deployed EW trucks every 10km along the front line.
The Pentagon believes that Ukraine may use other American munitions that are not affected by GPS substitution, in particular Harpoon missiles.
Another solution could be to launch JDAM glide bombs from F-16s, which can transmit navigation data to the munitions.
