The Ukrainian Armed Forces lost interest in the GLSDB (Guided Bomb Unit-53/B) American high-precision aerial bombs specially developed for them, because they fell victim to Russian electronic warfare (EW) systems. This was reported by the publication Defense One with reference to the US Ministry of Defense.
According to a Pentagon representative, the Armed Forces are no longer interested in these weapons, although they actively used bombs until February 2024.
And this is not the first Western weapon with GPS guidance that has been affected by Russian electronic warfare equipment. For example, in March it became known that the effectiveness of the high-precision Excalibur projectile dropped from 70 to 6% after the Russians placed trucks with EW systems every 10 km along the front line.
The Pentagon believes that Ukraine can use other American munitions that are not affected by GPS replacement, in particular Harpoon missiles.
Another solution would be to launch JDAM glide bombs from the F-16 that can transmit navigational data to the munitions.
