Ukrainian football player and coach of the Russian club Zenit Anatoly Tymoshchuk has succeeded in overturning the decision of the Ukrainian Football Association to strip him of all titles and awards, Ukrainian media reported, citing court documents.
As reported by the Ukrainian publication "Trybuna", the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne has granted the appeal of former football player Anatoliy Tymoshchuk against the decision of the UAF disciplinary committee.
The 45-year-old coach of Zenit St. Petersburg demanded that the sanctions imposed on him be lifted due to his continued work in the Russian Federation.
In March 2022, the UAF stripped him of all titles, his coaching license, and removed him from the official national team register for life.
Tymoshchuk filed an appeal with CAS in 2023, and the hearing of the case began in April 2024. The court has now overturned the decision of the Ukrainian football authorities.
CAS justified its decision by saying that during the period from the beginning of the full-scale invasion until March 11, 2022, Tymoshchuk did not commit any actions that would have required such disciplinary sanctions to be imposed on him.
The UAF commented on the CAS decision.
"The UAF has indeed already received a decision from CAS. Unfortunately, the Europeans approached this matter as formally as possible and confirmed a partial misunderstanding of the realities in which we live. The position of the Ukrainian football community is unambiguous and has never changed. People like Tymoshchuk have no place in Ukrainian football," the UAF said.
Tymoshchuk has been working as an assistant head coach in the Zenit coaching staff since 2017.
