In Germany, law enforcement officers have detained a suspect in the murder of former Ukrainian politician Andriy Portnov, Spanish media reported, citing sources in the investigation.
According to them, the detainee is a citizen of Ukraine. Other details regarding his identity and the circumstances of his detention are not being disclosed at this time. Official German authorities have not yet released an extended comment.
Andrey Portnov was shot dead in Madrid almost a year ago. The circumstances of the crime have long been the subject of an international investigation. Spanish law enforcement officers have been considering several versions from the very beginning, including possible motives related to his political activities.
Portnov previously served as an advisor to then-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych and was part of the circle of lawyers who formed legal mechanisms against Euromaidan participants. After the change of power in 2014, he left Ukraine.
The investigative authorities continue to establish all the circumstances of the crime, as well as possible accomplices. It is not yet known whether the detainee will be extradited to Spain for further procedural actions.
