Today is a day when traditions, religion, and folk wisdom intertwine. On this day, the church honors the apostle and evangelist Mark, and in the folk calendar, it is a period of signs that determined what the summer would be like, the harvest, and even the amount of honey.
Apostle Mark: Evangelist, Missionary, and Martyr
Saint Mark was one of the 70 apostles. He was born in Jerusalem and came to Christ through the apostle Peter. It was in Rome, while staying with Peter, that he wrote the Gospel of Mark, which became one of the four main texts of the New Testament.
Later, the apostle went to preach in Egypt, where he founded one of the first Christian communities. However, his life was tragically cut short: during a pagan holiday that coincided with Easter, a mob seized the saint, brutally tortured him, and killed him. The apostle Mark died in prayer, thanking God for his suffering.
