WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Message Summaries, which uses artificial intelligence to summarize the content of chats. The option allows you to quickly see what happened in a conversation without having to read each message individually.
Meta explained that this feature will come in handy after a flight, a meeting, or simply when there is a large amount of correspondence - when you don't want to or don't have time to reread everything.
Message Summaries is powered by Meta AI technology, and data processing is done through the Private Processing system, meaning all data remains on the user's device. The company emphasizes that the privacy of your conversations is not violated, and no other chat participant will know that you have used the summaries.
The feature is not activated automatically — it must be enabled manually via the “Settings” → “Chats” → “Privacy” section. There you can also choose which chats to allow access to AI-based summaries for — via the Advanced Chat Privacy setting.
For now, Message Summaries is only available in the US and English, but Meta plans to expand the functionality to other countries and languages later this year.
In addition to message summaries, the new AI tool can also help with writing replies using the context of the chat — but only after activating the corresponding option.
