Elevated cholesterol levels in the body often go unnoticed, but sometimes the body gives signals that should be taken seriously, warned Dr. Monica Wassermann in an interview.
As the specialist explains, the main danger is the so-called "bad" cholesterol - low-density lipoproteins (LDL). Its accumulation is associated with the development of atherosclerosis, impaired blood circulation, and the risk of heart attack and stroke. The problem often occurs in middle-aged and older people.
"Most often, high cholesterol can only be detected through a blood test. But there are a number of alarming signs that can sometimes indicate its excess," Wassermann noted.
What you should pay attention to:
Leg condition. Numbness, burning, tingling, pain in the feet — all this can be a consequence of the formation of cholesterol plaques in the vessels of the legs. Due to the narrowing of the vessels, the blood supply deteriorates, which leads to unpleasant sensations.
Changes in skin and hair. Feet become colder, hair loss occurs, nails deteriorate - they grow slowly or break.
Other symptoms:
-
chest pain;
-
constant feeling of fatigue;
-
frequent shortness of breath;
-
unexplained nausea;
-
high blood pressure;
-
a strong feeling of cold in the lower part of the body.
The doctor urged not to ignore such signs and to definitely see a doctor for an examination.
"Early detection of high cholesterol can avoid many complications. Regular health monitoring is the best prevention of serious diseases," Wassermann concluded.
