In Chernivtsi region, border guards detained three Ukrainian citizens who were trying to give a bribe for illegal crossing of the border. The State Border Service of Ukraine reported this on June 4.
The incidents occurred in different areas of the region, but were united by a common scheme - an attempt to avoid officially crossing the state border. In particular, two residents of Cherkasy region offered $2,000 each to one of the border guard inspectors for assistance in illegally crossing the Ukrainian-Romanian border. They were detained while transferring the money.
On the same day, law enforcement officers recorded another case at a checkpoint in the region. This time, a resident of Chernivtsi region gave a border guard $1,500 for assistance in traveling to Moldova outside the checkpoints.
All three men were detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. They were charged under Part 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (providing an unlawful advantage to an official). The court chose a preventive measure in the form of detention with the possibility of posting bail.
The State Border Guard Service urged citizens not to try to bribe officials, as such actions are punishable by law and can lead to imprisonment for up to 8 years.
