On Wednesday, August 21, Orthodox believers commemorate the memory of the holy apostle Thaddeus, one of the closest disciples of Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, he is also known as Judas Thaddeus or Judas, the brother of James (not to be confused with Judas Iscariot). Sometimes he is simply called Thaddeus to distinguish him from other Judases.
The Apostle Thaddeus was one of the twelve apostles whom Christ chose to preach the Gospel. According to tradition, after the Ascension, he preached in Syria, Mesopotamia, and Persia. There, according to tradition, he accepted martyrdom for his faith. In the Christian tradition, Thaddeus is considered the intercessor of those who are experiencing difficult circumstances, and he is addressed with a request for help and courage.
Also on this day, the church honors the holy martyr Vassa. She lived during the persecution of Christians (3rd–4th centuries), when believers were persecuted by the Roman authorities and pagans. Saint Vassa did not renounce Christ even under torture, leaving an example of steadfastness and unshakable faith. Her name has been included in prayer books and akathists, and the church honors her among the martyrs.
