August 8 combines several important and bright events for both Ukraine and the world.
Today is International Cat Day, a day when pets bring joy and comfort to people's lives. It's a great occasion to pay attention to your furry friend, treat him to a treat, or give a home to a homeless kitten. Also, August 8 is Mountaineer Day, Ophthalmologist Day, and Refrigerator Invention Day.
In Ukraine, this date has a special significance for the Armed Forces - today is the Day of Signal Troops. The work of these specialists is often invisible, but it is critically important: they ensure uninterrupted communication between units, configure systems, including Starlink, even during shelling. Without them, the army would be left without a “voice and hearing”.
The Orthodox calendar celebrates August 8 in memory of Saint Myron of Crete, a famous miracle worker, and Saint Gregory of Kiev-Pechersk, an icon painter. According to the old style, the martyr Yermolai and Saint Moses Ugrin are commemorated on this day.
August 8 is known among the people as the holiday of Myron the Wonderworker. People pray to him for help in fulfilling their plans. Traditionally, on this day, guests were invited and treated to homemade fruits and vegetables. Signs suggest what the weather will be like in the fall:
-
bright stars at night - to heat;
-
strong wind - to a cold snap;
-
rain and coolness - to a short Indian summer;
-
changeable weather – August will be unstable.
The Church and popular beliefs advise avoiding quarrels, lies, gossip, and complaints about life. The Assumption Fast is in progress, during which it is forbidden to eat meat and dairy products, as well as to arrange noisy feasts.
